A long distance move comes with many tasks, and accomplishing them all can certainly feel daunting. So, where do you start? Our Pacific Northwest moving pros have a few top tips they wanted to share, helping to ensure your moving day goes off without a hitch.

Uncomplicate Your Long-Distance Move

Use these six steps to help mitigate the stress of moving long-distance.

Step 1 – Book the movers

Before you do anything else, you need to find reputable long-distance movers and set the date. Start this process as soon as you can in order to research the moving company reputations and get several cost estimates. Hiring the right moving company is key to an easier move. You’ll feel more confident knowing your belongings are in safe hands and that you won’t need to micromanage next steps.

Step 2 – Declutter before you pack

If you’ve recently sold your house, the decluttering process has probably already begun. But don’t stop there. Every pound you pack into the moving truck will cost you money; if you don’t love it or need it, it should be donated, sold or re-homed. Keep in mind you’ll probably end up having to declutter again when you move in, as items may not fit or match the decor. A best practice? If in doubt, leave it out.

Step 3 – Do you need storage?

Sometimes it’s not possible to move into your new home right away. Reasons for this include wanting to paint before unloading your belongings, repairs are needed to the home, or you decide to replace fixtures or window treatments. If this is the case, or your have any inkling it may be, it’s a good idea to go with a moving company that can store your items, in addition to moving them. Be sure to bring this up as you discuss rates and moving dates.

Step 4 – Maximize space in the moving truck

Organizing your possessions prior to your move will ensure they’re properly protected on the truck, and make packing easier and quicker for your long-distance movers.

Here are some tips:

  • Disassemble all furniture that can be taken apart
  • Unplug refrigerators, washer/dryers, and defrost/clean
  • Clean and roll up rugs, then wrap them in plastic
  • Wrap breakable items (e.g. pictures, mirrors and TVs) in bubble wrap
  • Pack a box with moving day essentials to keep in an easy-to-reach spot
  • Transport collectibles, jewelry and valuables yourself in a separate, clearly-labeled box.

Step 5 – Cleaning the old and the new

As a courtesy to your new owners, clean as you go when packing up. You can also book a professional cleaner once you’ve finished packing to give the house a onceover. Hopefully, the sellers will give you the same courtesy, but they may not have or, if they do, they may do a poor job. Ask your realtor if they can recommend a reputable cleaning company, and arrange for the cleaners to have access before your moving day so you’re starting life in your new home on a clean slate.

Step 6 – Give yourself time

It takes time to feel settled when you’ve been through a long distance move, especially if you’re moving to a new climate, time zone or diving into a new-to-you culture. You may encounter meltdowns from kids, or experience them yourself! This is only natural. Give yourself a few weeks to catch your breath and be sure to take regular breaks from unpacking to explore your new city; you’ll soon feel more grounded!
