How to Pack Books for a Move

No matter the reasons that someone is moving, they will likely have many books that they want to take with them to their new home. These could be for leisurely reading, studying, or decorations. Some of these books hold great sentimental value or utility for people moving, so it only makes sense that they are curious about how to pack books for a move. In the following article, All Service Moving and our Portland movers detail some of the best tips for making sure that your books do not get damaged in transit.

How to Pack Heavy Books for Moving

Packing heavy books is much easier than lighter books because their sturdiness means that they are less likely to be damaged during transit. The key to success, in this case, is to make sure that you have the correct boxes for heavy books. As you may know, certain boxes are rated for weight. Depending on the weight of the books, you may need to purchase a different grade of box. After finding the correct box for the weight of your book, it will be necessary to prepare the box so that it does not get damaged or that the book does not fall through. To do so, you will need to purchase packing tape and tape the bottom of the box for extra support.

After preparing the box, you will need to place your books in a box by standing them upright, just like you would place them on a shelf. The books should fit snugly in the box but not too tightly so that they run the risk of being damaged when you take them out.

How to Pack Books in Boxes for Moving if They Are Softcover

Softcover books are much more delicate than hardcover books. Softcover books will require less sturdy boxes than hardcover books, and since these are usually smaller than hardcover books, more of them should fit in a single box. Our Seattle movers recommend that you pack these in flat stacks, but you can also pack them spine first if that saves you more space.

How to Pack Books for Storage

Packing books for storage is very similar to packing them for moving, but extra considerations need to be taken into account to preserve the quality of the book. One of the most pertinent considerations is to make sure that the storage that you will keep them in is climate controlled and cool. Humidity and heat are extremely conducive to mold forming, which compromises the quality of the pages and could destroy your book. Our Washington movers also recommend that you clean the book before putting them inside a box, which keeps them as clean as possible.
